Deborah Butler
I am a Liverpool based painter working in oil on canvas to create coastal, landscape and urban abstract paintings.
My work begins while walking through the landscape and around the coast, with rough sketches, notes and colour studies. Back in the studio I play with the scale and structure, colours and textures observed. I aim to recreate the landscape, the height and depth, the endless expanse and the closest detail. The abstraction varies so the observer may recognise the the location or simply sense something familiar, somewhere they have been before. Although some of my work is more abstract, it all starts with observation of the natural or built environment.
I studied textile design at Liverpool polytechnic. After graduating in 1987 I experimented with my creativity and soon realised that painting was my preferred medium. With my background in textiles I am more tuned in to texture, colour and structure in everything I see.
I am a full time professional painter, exhibiting in galleries and art fairs nationally since 2000 and I am a regular exhibitor at Manchester Art Fair, Plas Glyn Y Weddw and Art Fair Cheshire.
